Established in1925 and spread over 96 eacres, Loyala college, Chennai offers around 107 undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil and ph.D.programmes. One of chennai’s most prestigious institutions, the college,is planning a cokplete makeover. The celebrates 100 years of its establishment.

However, the funds needed to transform Loyala into a world class institute are in the region of Rs.200 crores and so the college recently set up the Loyala Development Office (LDO) to supervise fund raising and the kind of networking –establishing Loyola’s relations with other educational institutions here and overseas and with government and with non-governmental organizations—needed to meet its aims. The LDO will be headed by Joe Arun, Dean of External Affairs and Development. Apart from looking into fund raising, the development of human resources, training and building competencies in both teaching and non-teaching staff will also be supervised by the LDO.

The money raised will be used to build smart classrooms to execute new strategies in teaching and learning. A business school, a studies and a School of Education will also be planned with the funds.

However the college has some 150 ‘unaided’ teachers so if the government continued to offer grant-in-aid and pay their salaries and benefits, the college could explore the idea of converting into a university, said principal Father Albert Muthumalai.
