GOING NUCLEAR IS THE ORDER OF THE DAY

The demand for nuclear technology courses is on the rise in the wake of India taking its place amongst the nuclear nations of the world.
With the Nuclear Cooperation Agreement its final leg of completion, the education sector is also gearing up to meet the demang of trained personnel in the field with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) deciding to start a two year M.Tech pragramme in Nuclear Engineering and Technology from the 2009-10 academic session.

According to M.S.Ananth, Director, IIT-M, the course was initially being planned for the 2008 academic session.Owing to the subject’s inter-disciplinary approach, the institute is planning to take help from the mechanical, Chemical Engineering
And Technology from the 2009-10 academic session.

“IIT-M is launching an M.Tech course in Nuclear Engineering and Technology”
“with the sector scheduled to open up to private players, the days, of governmern salaries are over and the demand nuclear technology courses should be on the rise,” says Pramod Patil, an industry watcher.

Not to be left behind, Delhi University has launched an M.tech course in Nuclear Technology during the current academic year.With the country expanding its nuclear programme and about to set up new nuclear power plants, educators feel that the sector is bound to experience an increasing need of manpower.

Delhi Uiversity’s three-year, M Technology is in being conducted in collaboration with the joseph Fourier University of France. Students will bre able to avail of a scholarship of Rs,.3,000 per month and be sent to France as part of the course work an dissertation.

The course requires a Bachelor’s degree in Physics as a subject.IIT Kanpur and IIT Bombay who already run sucj courses are in the process of reviewing their course material.
